Structure – use signposts

Readers can navigate easily around a well-structured written communication and zoom in on the information they need without reading the whole text.

You have a range of structural devices at your disposal to make the structure obvious to the reader. They act as navigational aids and signposts for the reader:

● Headings
● Summary
● Title
● Contents page
● Index
● Sections
● Headings and sub-headings

● Bullet Points
● Numbering
● White space
● Fonts – type and size
● Bold
● Colour
● Layout

Even a letter or an email is easier to read when headings and other structural devices are used to lead the eye around the page.
